How much does a website cost for a small business?

A small business website in the US usually costs $2,000 to $15,000 to build, plus monthly hosting and care. Flamingo Agency says most professional small business sites start around $4,000 to $8,000, and the average web design project reviewed on Clutch is far higher, at $38,105. At Social Agencies, pages, features and connections drive the price.

What do US agencies and freelancers publish as website prices?

Published US prices for a small business site run from about $2,000 with a freelancer to $15,000 or more with an agency, with custom and ecommerce builds priced higher.

Flamingo Agency, a Chicago web agency, says most professionally built small business websites start around $4,000 to $8,000. It lists basic brochure sites at $2,000 to $4,000, ecommerce sites at $6,000 to $15,000 or more, and sites with custom functionality at $8,000 to $20,000 or more.

Hello Web Designs, a Texas web designer, puts freelancer builds at $2,000 to $6,000 and agency builds at $5,000 to $15,000 or more, plus $100 to $500 a month in retainers. Clutch, which collects verified client reviews of agencies, puts the average web design project at $38,105 and typical agency rates at $100 to $149 an hour.

Is a website a one-time cost or a monthly cost?

Usually both: websites are sold either as a one-time build plus monthly hosting and care, or as a single monthly fee that bundles the site, hosting and changes.

On the monthly side, Hello Web Designs puts agency retainers at $100 to $500 a month and sells its own sites at $150 a month with nothing down, or $3,500 one-time with $25 a month hosting. A do-it-yourself builder costs less: Wix lists its Light, Core and Business plans at $17.77, $29.77 and $39.77 a month billed yearly.

Neither model is automatically cheaper. Add up the total over two or three years, then ask the question that matters more than the price: who owns the domain and the site if you stop paying?

How much does a small business website cost?

For a small business site of five to ten pages built by a professional, published US prices cluster around $4,000 to $8,000, before monthly hosting and care.

That is the band Flamingo Agency gives for most professional small business sites, and it overlaps the low end of Hello Web Designs' agency range. A freelancer can come in lower; an agency doing custom design and strategy can come in well above it.

Published ranges usually cover pages, a contact form and basic on-page SEO. Custom features such as bookings, inventory feeds, payments or a client login are quoted separately, so expect those to add to the price.

What drives the price of a website?

Six things move the price: the number of pages, whether the design is custom, the features, what the site connects to, who prepares the content, and what support follows launch.

Two quotes with the same headline number can buy very different things. One may be a few pages on a template with your logo dropped in; another may include a page for every service, lead tracking and a link into your booking system.

  • Pages: one per service, and one per area you want to be found in.
  • Design: an adapted template, or a design made for your brand and photos.
  • Features: a form and click-to-call, or bookings, payments and logins.
  • Connections: inventory feeds, a CRM, accounting or a booking system.
  • Content: whether you supply the words and photos, or they are planned with you.
  • After launch: hosting only, or changes, fixes and backups as well.

Why do some websites cost $30,000 or more?

The top of the market pays for strategy, custom design, many pages, integrations and months of work: Clutch's average project of $38,105 reflects that end.

Clutch notes that the projects reviewed on its platform last about seven months on average. A site for a business with many services and locations, or one that has to connect to inventory, bookings or finance systems, takes far more hours than a five-page brochure.

Paying more only makes sense if the extra work earns its keep: more leads, less admin, or a system that replaces a spreadsheet. Ask what each extra line on a quote is for.

What should a website quote include?

A good website quote names every page and feature, who supplies the content, who owns the domain and hosting, what the monthly fee covers, and how to cancel.

Ask every provider to itemize, then compare line by line. If a quote will not say what is included, assume it is the smaller version. Social Agencies sends one fixed, itemized quote after a short call, so the full cost is known before anything starts.

  • Each page, named.
  • Every feature and connection, listed.
  • Who writes the words and supplies the photos.
  • The domain, the hosting and who owns each account.
  • What the monthly fee covers, and how to cancel.
  • Whether sales tax applies, where your state charges it.

Quick answers

How much does a website cost per month?

Published monthly costs run from under $40 a month for a do-it-yourself builder like Wix to $100 to $500 a month for agency care plans, going by Hello Web Designs' ranges. Check whether a monthly fee covers changes and support, or hosting only.

How much does an online store cost?

Flamingo Agency lists ecommerce websites at $6,000 to $15,000 or more. Payment options, shipping rules and the number of products push the price up.

Is a cheap website worth it?

It can be, if it is fast, you own the domain and it makes contacting you easy. It becomes expensive when it brings no leads, because you pay for it and still pay for leads somewhere else.

Should I hire a freelancer or an agency?

A freelancer usually costs less and suits a simple site. An agency suits a site that needs design, development, integrations and ongoing support from one team. Judge either on live sites you can test yourself.

Who should own my domain and hosting?

You should. The domain, the hosting and the website accounts should be registered to your business, so you can change provider without starting again.
